Renae Walker – Contract Administrator Assistant

Renae is currently a Contract Administrator Assistant working on the Albany Ring Road project in Albany, Western Australia.

Working for Decmil has always provided me with fond memories. It’s why I’ve come back to Decmil for the third round!

I am from Albany in Western Australia and was very lucky to be raised there where my family was involved in agriculture. When I finished high school in Albany, I was quite unsure of what I wanted to do, so decided to travel up to Karratha where I took a job role as a Site Administrator for a mining company. From there, I joined Decmil in 2009 as a Site Administrator for the Yandi Project. During this project, the Contract Administrator on the project needed some help and this was where I was first exposed to the Contract Administrator role and discovered that I really liked the analytical part of the job and found that the role was more challenging which was really appealed to me. I worked for Decmil for 10 months on the Yandi Project, learning a lot about Contract Administration and realising that this was the direction that I wanted to take in my career.

After completion of the Yandi project, I then worked for John Holland as a Project Administrator and Consolidated Minerals as a Site Administration Manager. In 2012 I once again joined Decmil as a Junior Contract Administrator on the Warrawandu Village Construction Project in Newman, WA. After completion of this project, I relocated to Decmil’s Perth office where I worked for four years as a Junior Contract Administrator on various other projects, including several Defence projects.

In 2017, after working in the construction industry for 10 years, I felt that it was time for a break and to head back home to Albany. I have always loved country life, and with my hobby being horses, I took a job as a stable foreman for one of Albany’s largest racehorse trainers. From there I joined the Commonwealth Bank in Albany as Assistant Branch Manager where I could apply my interest in analytics with my love of agriculture and the country.

The construction industry is fast paced, and you have to be willing to go out and get it, it won’t wait around for you. So when I heard the news that Decmil had won the Albany Ring Road project I put a reminder in my phone to call the HR team the next day as I felt it was time to get back into the Construction industry. So now I am back at Decmil as the Contract Administrator Assistant based in Albany, and this job will be the highlight of my career so far. It allows me to do what I love on a project that will benefit the people that I care about the most – my family and friends in the Albany community.

I enjoy the challenges and diversity that working in the construction industry provides me and although the job can sometimes be stressful, the amazing colleagues you meet along the way make it worthwhile and form an integral part of your life on site.
I am very grateful for the opportunities that my career in construction has given me. The job has been financially rewarding and has allowed me to enjoy my hobby of horses when I am on R&R, and it has allowed me to travel.

In the next 5 years I am looking forward to re-establishing a career in the industry and completing my Cert 3 and 4 in Building Construction through Decmil. Decmil has always been a fond memory which is why I am back for the third round!

Together, we’re the difference.

Together, we’re Decmil.
