Maribel Gomez is a Senior Project Engineer currently working on the Ison Road Overpass Project in Melbourne, Victoria. She studied Civil Engineering in Columbia before joining Decmil 5 years ago and has been involved in many projects during this time, including the Sheepwash, Warncoort, Plenty Road, Structures Rehabilitation Road Upgrades and Barwon Heads projects.
Maribel says that she has always been fascinated with construction in the way that an idea can be developed and transformed into something tangible; roads, tunnels, bridges, buildings. She has also had guidance from her older brothers who are also engineers.
In her free time, Maribel enjoys hiking, going to the movies and reading. She loves adventure and travel and experiencing different places and cultures.
Maribel says that she enjoys working at Decmil and feels that she has found recognition, great support, and an excellent team. She enjoys the diversity that her career offers, and although it is challenging at times it is also rewarding at the same time.
Maribel comments that project delivery comprises dynamic and multitasking activities that require a team effort to undertake a project from A to Z. The best part is when the team gets to share the satisfaction of a successfully completed project.
Her advice to those seeking a career in construction is that working in the construction industry requires you to be passionate and dedicated to your work, and that good communication skills and the ability to work under pressure are key.
