Decmil was awarded a contract by Queensland Hydro for design and construction of Temporary Accommodation Camps for the Borumba Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) Project.

The Borumba Pumped Hydro (PHES) Project is a 2,000 MW renewable energy project, which will provide the long-duration energy storage needed to reliably transition to Queensland’s future clean energy system. The PHES project is located on Lake Borumba, located near Imbil, west of the Sunshine Coast.

The Project involves the design and construction of two remote camps and associated facilities – the Borgan Camp and the Walkers Top Camp. The two workers camps will be constructed on previously cleared freehold land on the site of the Borumba Project.

In addition to the Borgan Camp and Walkers Top Camp, Decmil will also be construction two temporary fly camps (Frontier Camps) which will house Decmil staff and other workers during construction. A Frontier Camp will be built alongside the Borgan Camp and another one built alongside the Walkers Top Camp. These fly camps will house 84 persons each (with the ability to expand as required). Decmil is responsible for the design, construction, operation and management of the two Frontier camps, and will also demobilise the fly camps once complete.

Decmil’s scope of works includes all civil earthworks, above and below ground structural works (including foundation works), electrical works, mechanical works, and hydraulic works associated with the construction and installation of all buildings, facilities and infrastructure for both Borgan Camp (Upper camp) and Walkers Tops Camp (Lower camp).

The camps will be able to house up to 336 workers each, with each location containing a wellness room, gym facility, running track, social room, laundry facilities making workers on one of Queensland’s most important infrastructure projects feel right at home.

The proposed Borumba Pumped Hydro Project is currently undergoing early works onsite while Queensland Hydro seeks important regulatory approvals. In June 2023, the Queensland Government announced $6 billion in funding to progress the Borumba Pumped Hydro Project. The total project cost is estimated to be $14.2 billion. Pending successful planning and environmental approvals, the Project is targeting first power in 2030.
