Ajay is a Site Engineer who recently completed Decmil’s Graduate Development Program. He is currently based in Decmil’s Perth office, where he is working with the pre-contracts team doing project planning and tendering.

Ajay’s journey into the construction industry began in Nepal, where he completed his Bachelor of Civil Engineering. Driven by a passion for advancing his knowledge, he relocated to Australia and completed his Master of Civil Engineering at Edith Cowan University in July 2022.
Joining Decmil’s Graduate Program in January 2023 marked a significant milestone in Ajay’s career. He began as a Graduate Engineer on the Albany Ring Road Project, and spent 15 months working with the project team, constructing the largest infrastructure project delivered in the Great Southern region.
Ajay says that his role in this project not only enhanced his skills in project implementation and management but also fostered a deep appreciation for teamwork and problem-solving.

Ajay comments that working in construction is both satisfying and collaborative. He says, “One of the most rewarding aspects is seeing a project come to life from a blueprint to a finished structure. There’s a great sense of accomplishment in knowing that your work contributes to something that will stand for many years. The teamwork in the construction industry is significant because everyone needs to work together to solve problems.”
Ajay’s advice to those starting a career in construction is to focus on safety and learning new skills. He says, “Always follow safety rules and use the right protective gear. Additionally, construction is an evolving field, with new technologies and techniques constantly emerging. Stay curious and invest in your skills through certifications, training, and hands-on experience. Connect with experienced professionals and find mentors for guidance. Enjoy the challenges and take pride in the impact you make through your work.”
Ajay says that one of his highlights whilst working at Decmil was contributing to the successful completion of key milestones on the Albany Ring Road Project. This experience sharpened his technical skills and reinforced the importance of dedication and teamwork. He comments that supporting the pre-contracts team has broadened his understanding of the essential groundwork that supports successful project planning and execution.
Outside of work, Ajay likes to play cricket and football on the weekends and enjoys watching movies or series on Netflix. He says that his interests and activities outside of work help him to balance the demands of his career with personal relaxation and enjoyment.
