Shannon is a Superintendent at Decmil currently working on the Ison Road Overpass and Extension project in Melbourne, Victoria.
“We have great people working here, and it’s an enjoyable place to work. If you’re looking for a strong team and a rewarding career, this is the place to be.”
Shannon’s career with Decmil started in 2010, marking the beginning of more than a decade of dedication and expertise. Over the years, he has played an integral role in delivering key infrastructure projects, including the Barwon Heads Road Upgrade and the Drysdale Bypass. Recently, Shannon celebrated an incredible milestone with the Decmil team, recognising 15 years of outstanding service. His commitment, experience, and contributions continue to drive success across our major projects.
Shannon’s work spans across a diverse range of civil infrastructure projects, from bridges and roads to overpasses. Each project presents its own set of challenges, but for Shannon, he comments that the toughest hurdles are often those beyond his control. Shannon says, “Dealing with bad weather is the hardest part of the job. When things go wrong due to circumstances outside of your control, finding solutions can be difficult. But the usual challenges that come with construction are much easier to handle when you have a great team around you.”
Ensuring that jobs are completed on time and within budget is a crucial part of his role. However, he also focuses on something just as important—building a strong site culture.
Shannon comments, “People enjoying their work is key. When you have a great site culture, it makes a big difference—not just to morale but also to how well the team works together. That’s something that adds to Decmil’s brand and reputation.”
Over the years, Shannon has developed a range of new skills, but one stands out the most. He says, “Public speaking. I used to hate it, but now I’m much more confident. That, along with management skills, has really helped me progress in my career.”
When asked about career progression, Shannon is proud of his journey so far but remains open to new opportunities. “My goal when I started was to one day become Superintendent. I’m really happy with where I am now, but if the opportunity to progress further comes up, I’d definitely consider it.”
For those thinking about a career with Decmil, his advice is simple: “We have great people working here, and it’s an enjoyable place to work. If you’re looking for a strong team and a rewarding career, this is the place to be.”
Outside of work, family comes first. “Spending time with my wife, daughter, and family is number one for me. I also love racing and riding my dirt bike and mountain bike.”
At the heart of Shannon’s leadership approach is a belief that a positive work environment leads to better performance. “My aim has always been to create a workplace where people enjoy coming to work. When people like what they do, they’re more engaged and productive. I also believe that having a hobby or passion outside of work is really important for balance.”
With a strong work ethic, a people-first mindset, and a passion for continuous improvement, Shannon is making a real impact at Decmil—one project at a time.
