James Vung – Quality Manager

James is currently the Quality Manager for the Bulk Earthworks project at the Perdaman Urea Project in the Pilbara region.

There are opportunities to work across multi-disciplinary projects from start to end, which provides you the experience required to develop your skill set tremendously.

James’ choice of construction as a career was a natural fit for his interests. He says that from a very young age he always loved maths and physics and enjoyed the challenge of identifying issues and finding solutions. With his father was involved in property development and operated a sand and stone quarry business, James was exposed to building and construction from a young age. James completed his civil engineering degree in the United States of America.

James joined Decmil in 2022 and joined the project team working on the construction of the Roy Hill Munjina Road Over Rail bridge in the Pilbara region as Construction Manager. James’ next project was the construction of the Mitchell Freeway Principal Shared Path in Perth. He has also worked on the Pundulmurra TAFE Expansion project in South Hedland and the Logistics Haul Road project at Mount Hollad for Covalent Lithium. He is currenty working with the project team delivering bulk earthworks for the Perdaman Project, where he leads the QA/QC scope of works.

James says that he enjoys the work culture at Decmil, commenting that his work colleagues are professional, kind, considerate and respectful to each other. He says that teammates are willing to step in and help without hesitation, and that the team camaraderie lends itself to people not afraid to ask for assistance when issues arise. He also enjoys the opportunities to work across multi-disciplinary projects from start to end, which provides you the experience required to develop your skill set tremendously. James has worked on projects involving bulk earthworks, buildings, environmental, road infrastructures, bridges.

James says that working in the construction industry is very satisfying for engineers, as it provides you with many areas in which you can learn and increase your knowledge and skills. Being able to identify issues, analyse those issues and then produce a solution is extremely rewarding.

James is a classically trained pianist and plays several musical instruments, including the trombone and organ. He says that playing music helps him to wind down and de-stress. James is an avid reader and enjoys reading books during his R&R time off. He also enjoys spending time with his wife and children, and they often enjoy their time together eating out as a family enjoying their favourite cuisine. James also goes to gym regularly to stay fit and does weight training, cardio cycling, treadmill workouts and stretching!
